April Is Volunteer Month — and Your Hands Make Hope

By Bekah Clawson, President & CEO

April is Volunteer Month, a time to celebrate the people whose generosity strengthens our community. At Second Harvest, volunteers are the heart of our mission. Their time and compassion make it possible for us to deliver millions of pounds of food each year to families across our eight‑county region.

Volunteering matters because it connects us to one another. Hunger is not distant — it affects neighbors, coworkers, and classmates right here in Madison County. When someone gives even an hour of their time, they help ensure dignity and stability for families who are working hard to make ends meet.

There are many ways to get involved. Volunteers sort and pack food in our warehouse, support Tailgate distributions, assist with school‑based programs, tend our garden, and help with special events. Whether you enjoy hands‑on work, interacting with families, or behind‑the‑scenes support, there’s a role that fits your interests and schedule.

Finding opportunities is easy. Visit our volunteer page to explore upcoming shifts and sign up. The page is updated regularly, making it simple to choose the times and activities that work best for you.

We’ve also made volunteering even more convenient through the Second Harvest app, available on Apple and Android devices. The app lets you browse opportunities, register for shifts, receive reminders, and stay connected to what’s happening across our region. Many volunteers tell us it helps them stay engaged and serve more often.

As we celebrate Volunteer Month, I want to extend heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given their time to help feed East Central Indiana. And if you’ve been considering getting involved, now is the perfect moment. Your time makes a real difference — and together, we can ensure no neighbor faces hunger alone.
