The Movement to End Hunger

From the desk of Bekah Clawson, President & CEO

October is a big month at Second Harvest Food Bank. With fall harvests in full swing in and around the area, weโ€™re working hard to rescue as much food as possible and get it to neighbors without enough to eat. ย We know that hunger is a complex issue, so we’re tackling it from all angles. We’re working to improve access to nutritious food, expand economic security, and advocate for policies that make it easier for people to get the food they need. Weโ€™re part of a network of food banks, food pantries and community-based organizations in Indiana working to create a future where no one is hungry.

We all deserve to have enough food to eat without worrying if we can afford it. At Second Harvest we are working to make this a reality by ensuring everyone can get the food they need with respect and dignity. We offer a variety of programs and initiatives so people can access food without judgment or stigma. There is more to ending hunger than just food, so we partner with organizations to address underlying causes of hunger so people can thrive.

But just how many meals are we able to provide in our area? The answer might surprise you! Thanks to our network of partnerships across our eight-county service area in 2023, 7,497,000 meals were made possible. Providing food for kids and families every month allows them to spend the fall focused on the new schoolย year. Offering food to seniors and veterans allows them not to have to choose between food, medicine or other basic necessities.

Do you enjoy being part of a group that values the same things you do that also wants to make a difference? If so, I want to invite you to be a part of the Movement to End Hunger.ย  There are no official meetings to attend or rules to follow. It is a movement in which each person does one action that helps end hunger and inspires others to do one also. Those actions can include volunteering, donating, educating yourself and others about food and resource insecurity or advocating for public policies to improve the lives of neighbors in poverty.

If donating is your action of choice, every $1 donated by caring individuals like you helps us provide at least 4 meals for our neighbors experiencingย hunger. Thank you for being a part of the movement to endย hunger.
