September is Hunger Action Month, an annual nationwide awareness campaign designed to inspire everybody to take action in the movement to end hunger. For each week in September, we have a corresponding goal to achieve to help end hunger in manageable steps. Try to complete one activity per week!
WEEK 1: Spread the Word
Tell a Friend. Share this article with your friends and community so they can join in. Also, share our Hunger Action Month posts from our social media pages!
Wear orange to raise awareness about hunger. You can do this throughout the month, but on September 10, Hunger Action Day, make sure your orange shirt is clean so you can stand out and spark conversations about food insecurity. Encourage your workplace, organization, or volunteer group to join you in coordinating orange outfits to help spread the message together.
WEEK 2: Get Informed
Learn about hunger in your community. What are the statistics for hunger in your area? Do you know? Check Map the Meal Gap for local information! Visit map.feedingamerica.org to see how poverty and hunger look near you.
Watch The Working Hungry
The Working Hungry is a 30-minute film built around the stories of three families and, through them, the stories of more than 700,000 people across the state of Indiana. Most of these are working families, and their hunger is hidden from those around them. The compelling documentary asks why, in a time of low unemployment and food abundance, is food insecurity and hunger so prevalent and what can be done.
WEEK 3: Get Involved
Volunteer! A few hours of your time can feed hundreds of families. We have volunteer opportunities for all ages and in locations all over East Central Indiana. Find one that works for you!
Advocate for your hungry neighbors! Let your local, state, and national political representatives know that people in the communities they represent care about issues of hunger. Learn about current issues and get equipped to make your voice heard and create lasting social change.
WEEK 4: Donate
Give Today! We can provide 40 meals for only $10, thanks to our wide network of community partners, both local and national. Consider a one-time gift or make a monthly commitment to create a strong foundation for the future!
Consider Planned Giving. Include Second Harvest in your estate planning. Planned gifts can have a lasting impact, ensuring support for hunger relief efforts for years to come. Email Bekah Clawson to learn more about leaving a legacy of hope and help.
