HR 3159, the Food Date Labeling Act of 2023, is a small piece of legislation with far-reaching implications. Retailers and community members both throw food out unnecessarily because of intentional befuddlement of Sell By Dates and Expiration Dates. By making clear and specific rules around how food should be labeled, we can prevent food loss and ensure more nutritional stability for our communities.
This bill is in line with national strategies for preventing food loss, but has not been brought up for a vote. You can help keep perfectly good food out of landfills by urging your representatives to bring the Food Date Labeling Act up for a vote and voting YES when it comes up.
When you write or call your legislators, if you have a personal story of how supporting families facing hunger has helped them thrive, that would be a great place to share it! Real stories of real people are proven to lead to real change.
